Keeping Gratitude Top of Mind in 2020

December 14, 2020 | Company News

December 14, 2020 – In a year of disruptions and cancellations, gratitude keeps the Forward Financing team focused on all the good that we have in our lives today and all that is to come. We’re grateful for our fun-loving colleagues who kept our spirits up throughout the shutdown and motivated us to bring our best every day. And to our hardworking small business customers who reminded us of our impact on their businesses, families, and local communities, we thank you.

Volunteering at Forward

Giving back to the community is a cornerstone of the Forward Financing culture. All employees receive two volunteer days a year. Previous company-organized group community service events include the Greater Boston Food Bank,Pine Street Inn, and the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl. One of the most popular group outings, however, is Habitat for Humanity. In November, five team members helped with constructing two single-family homes in Malden, Massachusetts.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help “families build and improve places to call home,” believing that “affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities.” The organization purchases the home and materials and relies on volunteer labor to sell it at a discount to low-income families.

Alex Tomaino, Manager of Underwriting, shared that “it was a great experience and felt good to know that in a few months when it’s complete, two deserving families are going to own houses thanks to the work of Habitat for Humanity.”

Giving Week

This year, we hosted our first Giving Week celebration. Typically celebrated the week after Thanksgiving, Giving Week is a global generosity movement that encourages philanthropy and volunteering. We asked our team to nominate a nonprofit they are passionate about, and each day of the week, we donated to one of the organizations.

From feeding the homeless, providing work opportunities for the disadvantaged, and emotional support for girls who have lost their mother, our team advocated for a wide variety of causes. The organizations selected include Citizens InnNo Kid HungryEmpowerHerYearUp, and Birthday Wishes.

Another initiative launched this year was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston gift matching. The BGCB’s mission is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens” by offering after-school learning and physical activities. While Forward Financing matches all employee donations above $50, this was the first company-wide effort to support one nonprofit. All employee donations were matched three to one, making the total donation to BGCB nearly $8,000.

As we look to 2021, we are excited to continue to support our people, our customers, and our local communities in new ways.
